There’s a great resource out there for collectors of vintage costume jewelry – on line stores and on line auctions.
I’m going to focus on the virtually limitless selection on the largest on line auction marketplace, eBay. Anyone can sell just about anything on eBay, and there are hundreds of thousands of listings for jewelry. The prices can be amazingly low – some sellers start their auctions at under $1.00, and there is often a fixed price listed as well.
If you’re not familiar with shopping on eBay, go to eBay.com and click on the help column on the right side, then “help topics” for excellent advice and information.
You can browse, the Internet version of window shopping, without having a clerk hovering over you. If you’re looking for vintage jewelry, and you enter “vintage jewelry” in the search box, you’ll see that there are over 96,000 listings. You can narrow the search by entering “vintage earrings”, for example, and see over 17,000 listings. Narrow it down even further if you’re interested in a particular designer, such as Coro or Trifari. Currently there are over 300 listings for Coro, and 102 listings for “Vintage Coro Earrings Rhinestones”…see how it works?
Scroll through the selections and see what’s out there, and what the prices are. If you want to bid on or buy an item, eBay will walk you through the process.
And now a word (or two) about caution. eBay tries very hard to keep sellers honest. If you’re interested in a particular item, check out the seller’s feedback score, and look at the feedback comments. You can ask the seller a question about the item, and be sure to read the seller’s refund policy. Some do not accept returns if you are not satisfied with the item, but most do. Since you’re buying a piece of jewelry without personally examining it, you want to be sure you are getting what you want. Become knowledgeable about the jewelry you are interested in. Read books, Internet articles, and of course, more articles by this author!
